Female Orchid Classification System

Introduction

The following sections describe each orchid feature in more detail to identify common characteristics and common forms (varieties). It is not a complete inventory of each feature variation, but is intended to capture the most common features. More study is required to identify new and unique characteristics that may be rare but notable.

A general note about size. The following description sections generally do not define the size of an orchid feature. This is because amongst all orchids, labia for instance, can be large, medium or small. Without empirical measurement, this is just a subjective judgment. However, that being said, we can still attempt the most obvious size and shape generalizations, using common language to describe length, thickness etc. realizing that it’s loose, but it’s better than no description at all, even if it is somewhat empirically inaccurate.

Each feature is described in detail to create a starting inventory of common varieties so that a future and undiscovered new variety can be found and identified. As with real orchids, the splendor and diversity of female orchids is found in the details.
